01 What Is Legion Pulse?

Legion Athletics was founded by Mike Matthews — author of Bigger Leaner Stronger and host of the Muscle for Life podcast — who built the brand around a specific frustration: the gap between supplement marketing claims and actual clinical evidence. Pulse is the flagship pre-workout, and it embodies Legion's core philosophy: fewer ingredients, higher doses, and zero artificial additives.

The formula has six primary ingredients. All six are at or above their clinical effective doses. None contain artificial sweeteners, flavours, or dyes — an extremely rare combination for a pre-workout with 21 flavours. Every ingredient source and dose is published with citations on Legion's website. ISO 17025-accredited lab testing verifies label accuracy and purity. The result is the most credibly transparent all-natural pre-workout available in the mainstream market.

📚 Why "six ingredients" is a strength, not a weakness: The supplement industry frequently adds ingredients at sub-clinical doses to create an impressive-looking label. Pulse's approach is the opposite: six ingredients, all at clinical doses, all with genuine RCT evidence. The result is that every gram in the serving contributes meaningfully to performance — there is no label padding. This approach requires more expensive raw ingredients per scoop, which explains the premium price.

03 Ingredient Science — The Six That Matter

Citrulline Malate 2:1 — 8,000mg
Full clinical dose
IOC Category A8g — Clinical standard

8g of citrulline malate 2:1 provides ~5.3g of active citrulline plus malic acid. While pure citrulline (Gorilla Mode) delivers more active citrulline per gram, the malate form is the most RCT-validated format. At 8g total, this meets the clinical upper threshold for most studies showing improved endurance, pump, and lactate clearance.

CarnoSyn® Beta-Alanine — 3,600mg
Above clinical threshold
Patented CarnoSyn® ✔Carnosine loadingParesthesia expected

CarnoSyn® is the patented form used in virtually all the RCTs demonstrating beta-alanine's carnosine-loading and endurance benefits. The paresthesia (tingling) is strong at 3,600mg — expect it for 2–3 weeks before the nervous system adapts. The endurance gains (delayed muscular fatigue during high-intensity sets and HIIT) emerge from week 2 onwards as muscle carnosine saturates.

Caffeine 350mg + L-Theanine 350mg — The 1:1 Stack
Optimal 1:1 ratio
1:1 Optimal Research RatioClean energy — no jitter

The caffeine-theanine combination at 1:1 ratio is the most consistently replicated cognitive enhancement stack in the literature. L-Theanine's mechanism — promoting GABA and glycine inhibitory neurotransmission while reducing cortisol — directly counteracts caffeine's anxiety-producing effects without blunting alertness. At 350mg each, this is the most powerful natural clean-energy stack available. The entire session energy profile is clean, sustained, and jitter-free.

📊 Ingredient Doses — Legion Pulse vs Clinical Minimums
All doses meet or exceed clinical thresholds. No label padding. This is what "clinically dosed" actually means.

04 The 350mg Caffeine Warning

350mg of caffeine is approximately the equivalent of 4 strong espresso shots or 3.5 standard cups of coffee — in a single pre-workout serving. The FDA identifies 400mg as the safe daily upper limit for healthy adults. One full serving of Pulse uses 87.5% of this daily limit in a single shot. For most active users this is fine, but it creates two practical constraints: (1) essentially no other caffeine can be consumed that day without exceeding the safe limit, and (2) training after approximately 2pm risks significant sleep interference. Morning and early afternoon training sessions are where Pulse shines brightest.

⚠️Evening training strategy: Legion sells Pulse Stim-Free (no caffeine, no theanine) at the same price. For evening training days, use one scoop Pulse + one scoop Stim-Free: you get the full clinical doses of citrulline, beta-alanine, betaine, and Alpha-GPC at 175mg caffeine — well within sleep-safe limits. This is one of the most intelligent supplement stacking approaches available in the pre-workout category.

06 Who Should Buy Legion Pulse

Buy if you are: An athlete who refuses artificial sweeteners, colours, or preservatives in their supplements and wants a pre-workout that's genuinely clean without sacrificing clinical dosing. Endurance athletes or anyone doing HIIT — the 3.6g CarnoSyn® beta-alanine is the defining endurance ingredient here. Experienced pre-workout users comfortable with 350mg caffeine who want the cleanest, most transparent formula available.
Look elsewhere if: You are new to pre-workouts — 350mg caffeine will be overwhelming. You want creatine included — supplement separately or choose Gorilla Mode. You train in the evening — the caffeine load is incompatible with good sleep (use the Stim-Free version or choose BULK Black with its dual-phase caffeine). Budget is the primary concern — $2.25/serving is premium.
🏆
FitLab Score: 9.2/10
Legion Pulse is the best pre-workout for athletes who refuse to compromise on ingredient quality. No artificial sweeteners, no colours, no dyes — six clinically-dosed ingredients, ISO 17025 lab tested, and available with or without caffeine. The 350mg caffeine is significant; the 350mg L-Theanine makes it manageable.

07 Frequently Asked Questions

350mg is at the high end of the evidence-based effective range (3–6mg/kg). For a 70kg athlete, the clinical range is 210–420mg — so 350mg is within range but on the higher end. The 350mg L-Theanine (1:1 ratio) meaningfully reduces jitteriness and anxiety vs equivalent caffeine without theanine. Caffeine-sensitive users should start with one scoop (175mg caffeine + 175mg theanine) until tolerance is assessed.
No — Legion Pulse deliberately excludes creatine. The rationale from Legion Athletics founder Mike Matthews: creatine is best taken daily (including rest days) at consistent timing for saturation, whereas pre-workout supplements are only taken on training days. Including creatine in Pulse would result in inconsistent creatine dosing. Supplement 5g creatine monohydrate separately each day regardless of whether you train.
Pulse Stim-Free removes caffeine and L-theanine, keeping all other ingredients at identical doses: 8g citrulline malate, 3.6g CarnoSyn® beta-alanine, 2.5g betaine, and 300mg alpha-GPC. Many users mix one scoop of caffeinated Pulse with one scoop of Stim-Free to get full doses of non-stimulant actives with 175mg caffeine — a useful variable-stimulation strategy for different training times.
Legion products are tested in ISO 17025 accredited laboratories — meaning the lab's testing equipment and procedures are independently calibrated and verified. This ensures label accuracy and purity testing. However, Legion Pulse does not carry NSF Certified for Sport or Informed Choice certification. For competitive drug-tested athletes, this distinction matters — formal banned-substance certification is not provided.
