Cardiovascular
Nattokinase
Also known as: Natto extract · Bacillus subtilis natto enzyme · NSK-SD
A serine protease from fermented natto that degrades fibrin (blood clot protein) directly. Reduces blood clot risk and blood pressure. Strongest evidence in those with cardiovascular risk.

What Is Nattokinase?
Nattokinase is a serine protease secreted by Bacillus subtilis during the fermentation of soybeans to make natto (traditional Japanese food). It directly degrades fibrin (the structural protein of blood clots), reduces blood viscosity, and inhibits platelet aggregation. Unlike pharmaceutical thrombolytics, it is orally bioavailable and survives gut transit.
How It Works: The Science
Nattokinase directly cleaves fibrin peptide bonds, dissolving clots. It also activates tissue plasminogen activator (tPA) and urokinase plasminogen activator (uPA), amplifying the body's own fibrinolytic system. Additionally, it degrades PAI-1 (plasminogen activator inhibitor-1), removing the primary brake on natural fibrinolysis.

Dosage Guide
Effective Dose
2000–4000 FU / day
2000–4000 fibrinolytic units (FU) per day. Take on an empty stomach for maximum fibrinolytic activity. NSK-SD (nattokinase derived without vitamin K — important for warfarin users) is a preferred form.
Safety Profile & Side Effects
Significant anticoagulant effect — do not combine with warfarin, aspirin therapy, or other blood thinners without medical supervision. Avoid 2 weeks before surgery. Not for use in those with bleeding disorders.
Who Should (and Shouldn't) Take It
Those with cardiovascular risk factors (high fibrinogen, elevated clotting markers), long-haul travellers, and individuals wanting natural blood viscosity support. Requires medical oversight alongside anticoagulant therapy.
