Mucuna Pruriens (Velvet Bean)
Also known as: Velvet bean · Kapikacchu · L-DOPA plant · Cowhage

What Is Mucuna Pruriens (Velvet Bean)?
Mucuna pruriens seeds contain 4–7% L-3,4-dihydroxyphenylalanine (L-DOPA) — the immediate dopamine precursor used as pharmaceutical treatment for Parkinson's disease. As a supplement, mucuna raises dopamine, which inhibits prolactin (prolactin suppresses testosterone and GH), elevates LH, and directly stimulates testosterone synthesis.
How It Works: The Science
L-DOPA crosses the blood-brain barrier and is decarboxylated to dopamine by AAAD. Elevated dopamine inhibits prolactin secretion from the pituitary (via dopamine D2 receptors on lactotrophs). Reduced prolactin removes the tonic suppression on LH and GH release. Elevated LH then stimulates Leydig cell testosterone synthesis. Additional L-DOPA-independent pathways may include direct testicular effects.

Dosage Guide
Effective Dose
5g seed powder or 400–600mg extract / day
5g standardised seed powder (4–7% L-DOPA) or 400–600mg high-potency extract. Take with food to reduce nausea from L-DOPA conversion. Do not combine with levodopa/carbidopa prescriptions without medical supervision.
Safety Profile & Side Effects
Nausea is common, especially without food. Avoid with MAO inhibitors (risk of hypertensive crisis from dopamine accumulation). Not suitable during pregnancy. Drug interactions with levodopa and antipsychotics (which block dopamine receptors).
Who Should (and Shouldn't) Take It
Men wanting natural testosterone and dopamine support, those with fertility concerns, athletes wanting GH support, and those with low motivation or dopamine-related mood issues.
