Myo-Inositol
Also known as: Inositol · Myo-inositol · D-chiro-inositol · Vitamin B8 (unofficial)
A sugar alcohol acting as an insulin second messenger. Most evidence is for PCOS (restores ovarian function and reduces insulin resistance), OCD, and panic disorder.

What Is Myo-Inositol?
Myo-inositol is the predominant form of inositol in the body, serving as a precursor to phosphatidylinositol (PI) — a key component of cell membrane signalling. It functions as an insulin second messenger and FSH-sensitising molecule. Women with PCOS have documented inositol metabolism defects, making supplementation particularly effective in this population.
How It Works: The Science
Inositol phosphates (IP3, IP4) are generated from phosphatidylinositol and act as second messengers for insulin, FSH, and TSH receptor signalling. In PCOS, impaired inositol synthesis reduces insulin signal transduction — supplementation restores sensitivity. In the CNS, inositol is incorporated into membrane phospholipids and influences serotonin and dopamine receptor recycling, contributing to anxiolytic effects.

Insulin second messenger, FSH signalling support, serotonin modulation

Dosage Guide
Effective Dose
2000–4000mg / day
2000mg myo-inositol + 200mcg folic acid twice daily (standard PCOS protocol). For OCD/panic: 12–18g/day (high dose, under medical supervision). Lower doses of 500–1000mg/day for insulin sensitivity in general population.
Safety Profile & Side Effects
Excellent safety profile. GI upset (nausea, flatulence) at high doses (>12g/day). Very well tolerated at 2–4g/day.
Who Should (and Shouldn't) Take It
Women with PCOS (one of the most evidence-backed natural interventions), those with OCD or panic disorder (adjunct to treatment), and individuals with insulin resistance.
