What Is Chondroitin Sulfate?
Chondroitin sulfate is a major structural component of cartilage, forming the core of aggrecan proteoglycans that give cartilage its compressive resistance via water retention. Supplemental chondroitin is derived from bovine or marine cartilage. The GAIT trial (NIH-funded) found the glucosamine + chondroitin combination particularly effective for moderate-to-severe OA.
How It Works: The Science
Chondroitin sulfate chains bind large amounts of water via negative charges, maintaining cartilage hydration and resilience under load. It also inhibits aggrecanase and matrix metalloproteinase (MMP) activity — enzymes that degrade the cartilage matrix in osteoarthritis. Anti-inflammatory effects via NF-κB and PGE-2 pathway inhibition.
Primary Mechanism
Cartilage water retention, inhibition of degradative enzymes

Dosage Guide
Effective Dose
800–1200mg / day
800–1200mg/day, typically 1200mg in combination products. Requires 4–6 weeks for noticeable benefit. Bovine chondroitin is the most studied form.
Safety Profile & Side Effects
Excellent safety profile. May have mild anticoagulant properties at high doses — caution with warfarin. Derived from bovine cartilage — relevant for vegans.
Who Should (and Shouldn't) Take It
Those with knee OA pain, active individuals with joint wear, and older adults wanting to maintain joint health. Best used in combination with glucosamine.
