Alpha-GPC

Also known as: Alpha-glycerophosphocholine · L-Alpha glycerylphosphorylcholine

●●○Moderate Evidence

The most bioavailable choline source, effectively raising brain acetylcholine. Improves cognitive function and acutely potentiates growth hormone release.

Effective Dose

300–600mg / day

per clinical evidence

What Is Alpha-GPC?

Alpha-GPC is a choline-containing phospholipid that delivers choline across the blood-brain barrier more efficiently than choline bitartrate or lecithin. Acetylcholine is the primary neurotransmitter for neuromuscular signalling and cognitive function. Alpha-GPC is used clinically in Europe for cognitive disorders and athletically for focus and power.

How It Works: The Science

Alpha-GPC is cleaved to release choline and glycerophosphate in the brain. Choline is acetylated by choline acetyltransferase to form acetylcholine (ACh). Elevated ACh enhances neuromuscular drive, improves focus, and may amplify growth hormone secretion — possibly via cholinergic stimulation of the hypothalamus.

Evidence-Based Benefits

Improves power output acutely

moderate

Bellar et al. (2015) — 600mg Alpha-GPC 90 min pre-exercise improved lower-body power

Enhances cognitive performance (memory, attention)

moderate

Multiple clinical trials in MCI patients; Hosenbocus & Chahal (2012) review

Acutely elevates growth hormone

moderate

Ceda et al. (1992) — IV and oral GPC elevated GH in elderly; magnitude modest

Dosage Guide

Effective Dose

300–600mg / day

300–600mg, 30–60 minutes before training or cognitive work. 600mg is the dose used in performance studies. Often found in 50% phosphatidylcholine-bound powder — verify actual alpha-GPC content.

Safety Profile & Side Effects

Well tolerated. Mild headache and dizziness occasionally reported. Theoretically, high choline intake may increase TMAO — not established at supplemental doses.

Who it's for

Athletes seeking sharper mind-muscle connection, those wanting a non-stimulant cognitive boost, and anyone stacking with caffeine for a comprehensive pre-workout effect.
