Sleep & Recovery
GABA (Gamma-Aminobutyric Acid)
The brain's primary inhibitory neurotransmitter. Oral GABA has poor blood-brain barrier penetration, but PharmaGABA (natural fermented form) may work via gut-brain axis.
Effective Dose
100–750mg / day
per clinical evidence
Evidence Level
Limited
Sleep & Recovery
Mechanism
GABA-A receptor agonism (disputed BBB penetration)
primary action
Best For
Relaxation
Pre-sleep anxiety, Growth hormone release

What Is GABA (Gamma-Aminobutyric Acid)?
GABA is the major inhibitory neurotransmitter in the CNS. Despite intuitive logic, oral GABA supplementation's ability to cross the blood-brain barrier (BBB) is debated. However, PharmaGABA (produced by Lactobacillus hilgardii fermentation) appears to exert some CNS effects, possibly through vagal nerve pathways.
How It Works: The Science
GABA binds GABA-A (ionotropic Cl⁻ channel) and GABA-B (metabotropic) receptors, reducing neuronal excitability. Peripherally, GABA receptors in the gut and enteric nervous system may communicate with the brain via the vagus nerve, partially explaining why oral GABA affects relaxation despite limited direct BBB crossing.
Primary Mechanism
GABA-A receptor agonism (disputed BBB penetration)
Evidence-Based Benefits
Dosage Guide
Effective Dose
100–750mg / day
100–750mg PharmaGABA or synthetic GABA before bed. PharmaGABA preferred based on mechanism. L-theanine provides GABA-like effects with stronger evidence.
Safety Profile & Side Effects
Well tolerated. Not a regulated drug at supplement doses. Avoid high doses with alcohol or benzodiazepines.
Who Should (and Shouldn't) Take It
Those with pre-sleep anxiety who want a gentle relaxing supplement. Manage expectations — l-theanine and magnesium have more consistent evidence for relaxation.
